Supervise others to empower them

If you are a supervisor, you may want to gain new skills in supervising others by participating in Supervision Training Course by pdtraining in Lagos or another city in Nigeria.

Supervision requires flexibility because each person you supervise is different from others. Some may be more experienced than others, some better communicators, and some more open to learning. Depending upon employee’s needs and requirements, you may need to provide them with customized support occasionally.

Establishing Communication Channels

Effective communication is the backbone of good supervision. The employees that have various mediums through which they can communicate with their supervisors are more likely to initiate an interaction. Some of the more introverted employees may prefer to communicate with you through email than to have a face-to-face communication. After they have initiated a conversation with you verbally or through writing, you may then choose to provide them with guidance through any medium you think suitable.

You need to make sure that employees can choose from various channels of communications depending upon their comfort and preference. Remember that some people do not like to talk over the phone, and some are uncomfortable interacting in writing. So, providing them with a choice is encouraging them to interact with you.

Identifying Discomfort

We cannot always judge the needs of others accurately. Even though supervisors are skilled in providing the tools that are required to successfully carry out jobs, it is important to notice if any employee is uncomfortable at work. Some of the common causes of discomfort of employees are:

  • Bad behavior by fellow employees
  • Unavailability of the tools to carry out duties
  • Uncomfortable working area
  • Unsuitable working hours
  • Unsuitable job profile/tasks
  • Stress outside of work

You may try to determine the reason for the discomfort of an employee through observation, or you may ask them if they have any difficulty that they may want to discuss. If an employee is shy and introverted, you may communicate with them through email if you believe they will open up better in a written communication. Identifying the problems of employees will help you to fix any issues that may escalate, if left unattended.

Challenge and Reward

The best way to engage employees is to present challenges before them, and if they succeed, reward them for their achievement. It helps to keep employees motivated to do better. To help employees to meet challenges, provide them with guidance and support whenever needed.

Challenges are also a good way to make adults eager to learn new things or to take up new tasks. When creating challenges for employees, make sure that they are achievable and do not stress the employee too much. For that, you will need to judge the ability of the employee. Also, space the challenges to provide sufficient breaks.
